By the time Twista’s ‘Kamikaze’ hit shelves in early 2004, the mouth muscle training required to keep up with the Chicago rhymer’s jackhammer flow was in full effect among the masses. “Slow Jamz” was mere weeks away from scaling the peak of the Billboard Top 100, giving Twista and his pals Kanye West and Jamie Foxx their maiden numero unos on the chart. Like the title indicates, its conceit centered on namedropping famous purveyors of slow jams, leading everyone to rhyme “sheets wet” with Keith Sweat, and “bend ya ass” with Teddy Pendergrass, all at auctioneer speed. Don’t get it Twista’d though, the second album from the dude born Carl Mitchell was far from a one-hitter, thanks in part to “Overnight Celebrity.” Also produced by Ye, its smooth piano-based beat and Mista Twista’s Guinness Award-worthy chopper flow assisted in its own Top 10 appearance. Twenty years later, the sound of that era is so unique that it’s worth celebrating. So we invited the veteran icon to our ctrl stage, where he proved he hasn’t lost his sixth gear. If anything, the years have turned him into a showman. It’s so fun watching him intro these songs, you can tell there’s a lot of pride behind those sunglasses. Warm up with some enunciation exercises, then see how long you can hang with those spitfire bars.
